Our First SWIB Wedding Pair: Mimi and Liron!

Mimi & Liron WedIn a story that not even the brilliant Nicole Conn could conjure, Mimi Torchin and Liron Cohen’s love story crossed oceans and continents (Liron is Israeli, Mimi is a New Yorker) and broke age barriers (Mimi is 34 years older than Liron!) to find its happily-ever-after ending.

The women met on Twitter in July 2009 when Guiding Light’s lesbian love story created a sensation, and a huge family of women came together (no comments, please!) to celebrate this beautiful story. Liron was a fan of the Otalia (Olivia and Natalia) ┬ástory and Mimi was a well-known soap opera journalist, the former founding Editor-in-chief of Soap Opera Weekly. The gorgeous Crystal Chappell, the “O” half of Otalia, suggested to her followers that they also follow Mimi (who was writing about the storyline online for TV Guide Online). As the cliche goes, the rest is history. Liron did as instructed and began following Mimi, tho she had no idea who she was. The two almost immediately moved to email, phone, and video chat (Mimi wanted to make sure Liron saw the real her, not the 10-year-old photo on Twitter). They fell deeply in love almost immediately, in spite of the fact that neither was looking for a relationship, especially thousands of miles away. But their love was too strong and Mimi ended a 28-year relationship to be with Liron.

Marriage was not on the agenda, as The end of DOMA was only a faint glimmer of a possibility at the time. Liron moved to New York (they had spent time with each other in each other’s home countries first), moved in with Mimi, enrolled in college. ┬áSo, (finally) cut to the chase, the Supreme Court declared DOMA unconstitutional (the section stating marriage is only legal between one man and one woman) on June 26, 2013. Mimi and Liron were in their summer home on Martha’s Vineyard but they quickly planned a City Hall wedding in NYC with several of their closest friends that took place on July 12, 2013.

Now Mrs. and Mrs., the couple is more in love than ever, saying to each other with wonder several times a day, “We’re MARRIED!” Life has interesting things planned for us all if we’re brave enough to take a leap of faith!
